Jeroboam's Granary in Megiddo

Grainery in Megiddo

This is a public grain silo from Megiddo. There is another stairway opposite this one. Perhaps one was used to go down to the grain level and the other to go back up. This silo is about 23 feet deep and could have held over 12,000 bushels of grain. At homes, grain was often stored in large jars with pointed ends. These jars were probably set in holes or leaned against walls. This silo probably dates to the reign of Jeroboam II (about 784-748 BC).
