Upon this Rock I Will Build My ChurchWe are in Caesarea Philippi, the Banias. This rock is traditionally the location of Peter's affirmation of Jesus as the Son of God and the Messiah. The church on the left is built over the location of the affirmation (it at least occurred somewhere in this vicinity). The cave on the right is a shrine built by Herod Philip for the Roman nature god Pan. Peter's affirmation is important in understanding the nature and mission of Jesus Christ. His nature is revealed in the first part of the affirmation - he is the Son of God. His mission is revealed in the second part - he is our Messiah, the Hebrew word for savior. For more information on this affirmation, take a quick break from the tour and check out a Bible Study on the subject.
